Maceió, the capital of the state of Alagoas in the northeast of Brazil,
is a relaxed, modern city with some of the most beautiful and alluring
beaches in all of South America. Add to this a tropical climate
of endless sea and sun, proximity to cities such as Recife and Salvador,
and easy access to the vast Amazon basin, and it's easy to see why
Maceió makes an ideal setting for learning Portuguese. The
city itself occupies the tip of a curved peninsula, and has an orla,
or strip of in-town beaches, where many of the city's quality hotels
and restaurants are found. If you don't like the sun or the water
you'll be hard-pressed not to be swayed once you arrive...and if
you do, then welcome to paradise.
