Québec City is the capital of Québec and, after Montreal, the second largest city in the province. Located on the St Lawrence River, it is one of North America's most attractively-set and historic cities. Québec's Old Town is the only North American fortified city north of Mexico whose walls still exist, and as such was declared a World Heritage Site in 1985. Today, Québec City is known as the provincial hub for all things cultural, educational and industrial too, and is also recognised for the pleasant kind of living that it offers - one, in fact, of which its Gallic forbears would be proud. Although Québec's mixed heritage and geographical location has made it largely bi-lingual, French remains the clear the language of choice.
