With an enviable location on the western edge of the Black Forest in Germany’s south-west, near the French and Swiss borders, Germany’s ‘sunny city’ of Freiburg is a hub for regional tourism. Its 215,000 inhabitants, of which 25,000 are university or college students, are used to receiving visitors keen to discover its fascinating history, dating back to the 12th century, and explore the beautiful surrounding area in plentiful warm and sunny days. More recently, Freiburg has also become a prime example of an eco-city, investing admirably in solar power and research, low energy housing and recycling. And if Freiburgers aren’t cycling, they’re using the city’s extensive pedestrian zone or excellent public transit system to make their way cleanly and efficiently around the city. Respect and enjoyment of the environment makes this a great place to stop for a while and learn German.
