:: Welcome to Colchester
You wouldn’t think that the town of Colchester, tucked away in pretty Essex countryside and near beautiful unspoilt coastline, would be a significant location on the map. But as the oldest recorded town in Britain, it has played an important role in some of the country’s most important historical events over the past 2,000 years. It was established as the Roman capital while London, less than an hour away, was still a small trading post, and a thousand years later William the Conqueror built a castle on the site of its Roman temple. Since then it's been a source of inspiration for famous British artists such as Constable and Gainsborough, and visitors can today enjoy exploring the town’s many art galleries, museums, shops and lanes at the same relaxed and friendly pace as the locals. Colchester is also right on the doorstep of the sweeping landscapes and stunning coastline of the East of England, making it an ideal location for outdoor enthusiasts.
