An unspoilt cathedral city on the edge of the South Downs, just one hour from London, Winchester is England’s ancient capital and former seat of King Alfred the Great. It combines the best of city life with the freshness of beautiful surrounding countryside, and throughout its past and present has appealed to all age and backgrounds: it is the resting place of one of the country’s greatest authors, Jane Austen; birthplace of the traditional English sport of cricket; home of the Great Hall which for 600 years housed the legendary Round Table, and the site of one of England’s oldest and most renowned schools, Winchester College. It is a delight to walk down its cobbled pedestrian streets past original boutiques and art galleries, stop off at its colourful markets and pop into one of its many traditional pubs or modern, airy bars. You can really be as lazy or as adventurous as you like in Winchester – there’s plenty to do if you want, but it’s easy to sit back and simply soak it all up too.
